A practical comparison for US distributors and suppliers evaluating EDI providers.
Written by Ramesh Nuti, founder and CEO of ActionEDI.
SPS Commerce is the largest EDI provider in the market, with over 115,000 trading partners. For businesses with large, diverse partner networks, that scale is a genuine advantage. But over the past five years running ActionEDI, I have talked to hundreds of distributors and suppliers about their EDI experience. A significant number of those conversations start the same way: we are on SPS Commerce, and we need to find something different.
I have a bias here. ActionEDI is one of the providers I cover. But I will be direct about where we are strong, where we are not the right fit, and where another provider might serve you better. If ActionEDI is not the answer, I would rather you know that before you call us.
The reasons vary, but four patterns show up consistently across public reviews, direct conversations, and industry forums.
Per-document pricing models can make EDI costs difficult to forecast. Several businesses report monthly costs increasing significantly within the first year as volumes grew beyond initial estimates. When every purchase order, invoice, and ASN carries a per-document fee, costs scale in ways that are hard to predict during the sales process.
Many businesses report onboarding stretching from weeks into months, especially when support response times slow down. For suppliers facing retailer compliance deadlines, a 3-month onboarding cycle for a standard setup creates real business risk.
This is the most consistent pattern. The sales experience is frequently praised. The post-sale support experience draws mixed feedback, with some businesses reporting long ticket response times and difficulty reaching knowledgeable staff after the contract is signed.
Some major retailers outsource EDI testing and certification to specific providers. This can create a dual-cost situation that disproportionately affects smaller businesses.
These are not universal experiences. Many businesses use SPS Commerce successfully. But the frequency of these concerns suggests systemic patterns, not isolated incidents.
Before comparing specific vendors, here is what to pressure-test in every conversation.
Show me a sample invoice with every possible line item. If they cannot or will not, that tells you something about pricing transparency.
What does support look like 6 months after I sign, not during the sales process? Ask for references from customers who have been with them for 2+ years.
How long did your last 5 onboardings take? Not the best case. The average. With trading partners similar to yours.
What happens to my pricing if volume doubles this year? Get the answer in writing before you sign.
What happens if I want to leave? The answer tells you how the provider views the relationship. Providers confident in their service make it easy to leave.
This table covers the factors that matter most to the distributors and suppliers we talk to. It is not exhaustive, but it covers where the real differences show up.

ActionEDI is a flat-rate, managed EDI platform for US distributors and suppliers trading with Fortune 500 retailers. We specialize in X12 EDI for retail and manufacturing workflows. If you need reliable EDI with predictable costs and fast human support, this is where we are strongest.
Pricing unpredictability → Flat-rate annual pricing
Your price is calculated once based on your actual setup and locked in for the full year. No per-document fees. No mid-year overages. If your volume doubles in June, your price stays the same until renewal. Most customers pay a few hundred dollars per month, billed annually.
Slow onboarding → 2 to 4 weeks, not months
We handle mapping, testing, and partner setup. When testing issues come up, our support team responds within an hour during business hours. We do not disappear between testing rounds.
Disappearing support → Under 1 hour response, founder-accessible
US-based EDI specialists. Phone Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM Pacific. Email and chat around the clock. The people who answer your questions built the platform. When something is blocking a shipment, you can reach the founder directly.
Cost surprises → $0 setup fees. $0 per-document fees. No hidden add-ons
No hidden add-ons for new trading partners, AS2 connections, or support tiers. Your annual rate includes unlimited transactions, unlimited trading partners, and real human support.
ActionEDI is one of the first EDI providers fully integrated with CDW's API. While most providers still rely on AS2 and batch processing, our CDW customers get real-time data exchange, faster order processing, and zero AS2 certificate management. If you are a CDW supplier, this is worth a separate conversation.
"Switching to ActionEDI from a well-known provider has been a decision we have not regretted for a second. Their robust platform, top-notch customer service, and seamless transition have made our EDI processes smoother than ever."
"ActionEDI has revolutionized our operations with remarkable cost efficiency and seamless integration. Their support has been exceptional."
"ActionEDI has been instrumental in streamlining our operations. Their user-friendly platform and exceptional support have made it easy for our team to adopt EDI, even without prior experience."
We believe in telling you upfront so neither of us wastes time.
International EDI (EDIFACT): We support X12 only. If you trade internationally and need EDIFACT, we are not the right provider.
Healthcare / HIPAA: We do not support healthcare EDI transactions.
Thousands of global trading partners: If you need a massive pre-built network spanning dozens of countries, a provider like SPS Commerce with 115,000+ connections may be a better starting point.
Non-US businesses: We serve US-based businesses (with some Canada support).
Year 1 free for qualifying new customers
If you are evaluating providers and want to test the experience before committing long-term, ask us about this during your fit check.
Depending on your situation, one of these may be a better fit than ActionEDI.
Best for: businesses that need the largest pre-built trading partner network
SPS Commerce has the broadest network in the industry with 115,000+ trading partners. If you trade with a large number of diverse partners across multiple industries, that network breadth is a real advantage that smaller providers cannot match.
Strengths: Largest trading partner network. Deep retailer relationships. Extensive pre-built connections reduce partner onboarding friction for common retailers.
Watch for: Per-document pricing that can scale unpredictably. Mixed post-sale support feedback. Some users report onboarding timelines stretching beyond initial estimates.
Best for: mid-market businesses that need deep ERP integration
TrueCommerce offers a broad integration ecosystem with strong ERP connectors. If your priority is connecting EDI tightly to NetSuite, SAP, or similar systems and you have IT resources to manage the integration, they are worth evaluating.
Strengths: Wide ERP integration support. Cloud and on-premise options. Established mid-market presence.
Watch for: Pricing with multiple fee components. Some customers report the platform is better suited for mid-market enterprises than growing suppliers.
Best for: budget-conscious businesses on NetSuite with straightforward EDI needs
BetterEDI offers transparent, publicly available pricing and a direct NetSuite integration. If your EDI needs are straightforward, you are on NetSuite, and budget is the primary concern, they are a practical option.
Strengths: Transparent pricing. Simple setup. Strong NetSuite focus.
Watch for: Smaller provider with a more limited trading partner network. May not have the depth of support for complex EDI scenarios.
Choosing an EDI provider is not about finding the best one. It is about finding the best fit for your specific situation.
If your primary concern is predictable costs: Look at flat-rate providers first. Ask every provider to show you exactly what your invoice will look like in month 6 and month 12.
If your primary concern is fast onboarding: Ask for specific timelines with your trading partners. Get commitments in writing. Ask what happens to the timeline if issues arise during testing.
If your primary concern is support quality: Ask for references from current customers in your size range. Ask those references about their worst support experience, not their best.
If your primary concern is trading partner coverage: SPS Commerce's network size is a genuine advantage. If you trade with a large number of diverse partners, that breadth matters more than pricing model.
If you are a CDW supplier: ActionEDI's full API integration is worth evaluating specifically. Real-time data exchange and eliminating AS2 certificate management can meaningfully improve operations.
Our fit check takes about two minutes and does not require a signup. If we are not the right fit, we will tell you.
